Stan began his footballing career as a 17-year-old apprentice for Manchester City and scored a brace on his debut as an 18 year-old against Leicester City in the League Cup on 13 Septmber 1967. Joe Mercer and Malcolm Allison handed Stan his league debut for City against Sheffield Utd and he found the back of the net twice in a 5-2 victory.

After a brief stint at Bury, Bowles enjoyed successful spells at Crewe and Carlisle between 1970 and 1972 before joining QPR.

Brian Clough signed Stan for Nottingham Forest in 1979, before he returned to London to play firstly for Leyton Orient and then Brentford.
